Agfa Radiology, AHRA and AdventHealth open RadX 2027 to hospital radiology departments, spotlighting radiology administration’s emerging leaders

Registration is open now. For the first time, hospital radiology departments can enter teams alongside AS-to-BS degree completion programs, competing on the same case before the same judges.

Agfa Radiology, AHRA: The Association for Medical Imaging Management, and AdventHealth are joining forces for the second edition of the RadX national case competition, the first U.S. case competition dedicated exclusively to radiology administration. RadX asks teams to solve a real operational problem written by a leading health system and to defend their solution before a panel of judges, giving the field’s emerging leaders a stage to show what they can do. The inaugural 2026 case was authored by Cleveland Clinic.

Applications are open now through January 30, 2027. Teams receive the case on February 1, submit their work by February 26, and present virtually the week of March 8. The winning team will be announced in April 2027 and will receive a $2,000 cash prize and an expense-paid trip to present at the AHRA 2027 Annual Meeting.

Highlights:

  • RadX is designed for ambitious teams eager to strengthen their leadership skills, sharpen their analytical thinking, and expand their professional networks.
  • Teams may enter from an AS-to-BS radiography degree completion program. Participants are practicing technologists, some already in management, all completing a degree because they intend to go further. New for 2027, a hospital radiology department may enter a team of three to five nominated by their departmental leader. Both routes work the same case and are judged by the same panel.
  • Teams will work a real operational challenge in radiology administration written by AdventHealth.

Opening the competition to hospital departments

“The success of the inaugural RadX competition highlights the demand for innovative leadership development in medical imaging. We congratulate all participants, especially Mercy College of Ohio, and are excited to expand the competition in 2027 to engage both emerging and current leaders. Supporting leadership growth and advancing the profession are central to AHRA’s mission.”
Cindy Winter, CRA, FAHRA, AHRA President

“Watching the winning team defend their recommendations in front of a room of radiology leaders at the AHRA Annual Meeting is exactly what I hoped RadX would produce. It is leadership development that happens to look like a competition. And that matters, because we often ask our best technologists to step into leadership, then let them learn the hardest parts of the job under pressure. RadX gives them somewhere to practice first,” says Jordan Hermiller, Technical Manager North America at Agfa Radiology.

“AdventHealth is excited to help shape the 2027 case around a real-world challenge our teams face every day and bring that challenge to professionals from across the country. We are committed to developing leaders at every level of our network of care, and case competitions create a unique opportunity to move beyond discussion and into problem-solving, collaboration, and ownership. We are proud to partner with Agfa Radiology and AHRA to bring this experience to the field,” says Elizabeth Evans, Senior Modality Manager, Diagnostic/Imaging, AdventHealth Central Florida and Imaging Instructor, AdventHealth University.

“RadX challenged our students to think critically, work as a team, and present innovative solutions to industry leaders. That kind of real-world experience is essential in preparing the next generation of imaging leaders,” says Dana Eskins, Ed.D., Director of Imaging Sciences and B.S. Medical Imaging Program Director at Mercy College of Ohio, whose team won the inaugural competition.

About RadX 2027

For RadX 2027, participating teams will receive a detailed case study developed by AdventHealth that focuses on a current challenge in radiology administration, such as AI adoption, productivity benchmarking, capital budgeting, dose management, staffing and workforce planning, or imaging workflow and operations. Teams will have four weeks to analyze the case, develop a solution, and prepare a presentation of 15 to 20 minutes, followed by 10 to 15 minutes of questions from the judges.

Submissions will be evaluated by industry experts from AHRA, Agfa Radiology, and AdventHealth. The winning team will receive a $2,000 cash prize, an expense-paid trip to present at the AHRA 2027 Annual Meeting, AHRA memberships, and the team’s name will be added to the traveling trophy.
